Optical properties of dissolved organic matter in throughfall and stemflow vary across tree species and season in a temperate headwater forest

چکیده
Abstract Tree-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) comprises a significant carbon flux within forested watersheds. Few studies have assessed the optical properties of tree-derived DOM. To increase understanding factors controlling DOM quality, we measured properties, (DOC) and calcium concentrations in throughfall stemflow for 17 individual rain events during summer fall temperate deciduous forest Vermont, United States. DOC fluxes were enriched on average 4 to 70 times incident rain. A multiway model was developed using absorbance fluorescence spectroscopy further characterize properties. Throughfall contained higher percentage protein-like than while characterized by humic-like fluorescence. spectral slopes yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis ) significantly sugar maple Acer saccharum stemflow. metrics not influenced rainfall volume, but percent increased autumn when leaves senesced. Given potential influence receiving soils downstream ecosystems, future modeling transport soil biogeochemistry should represent differing quality across tree species seasons.

Photochemical andmicrobial alteration of dissolved organic matter in temperate headwater streams associated with different land use
[1] Photochemical and microbial transformations of DOM were evaluated in headwater streams draining forested and human-modified lands (pasture, cropland, and urban development) by laboratory incubations. Changes in DOC concentrations, DOC isotopic signatures, and DOM fluorescence properties were measured to assess the amounts, sources, ages, and properties of reactive and refractory DOM under t...
